Trina Kumodzi, BSN, RN, CCRN

Biography

Trina Kumodzi, BSN, RN, CCRN is a BSN-PhD student at the University of Virginia School of Nursing. She graduated cum laude with an Associate Degree in Nursing from the Community College of Baltimore County in Maryland and she was honored with the prestigious Dr. Mary Lou Stromer Nursing Excellence Award. She also graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Nursing from Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing. Her research interest is firearm injury prevention to reduce hospital readmission rates. Ms. Kumodzi is a board-certified critical care nurse with clinical experience in trauma and adult critical care. She is adjunct clinical nursing faculty at the Community College of Baltimore County and a professional nursing curriculum tutor for students at the College who need supplemental instruction to successfully matriculate. She also works as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Virginia. Ms. Kumodzi is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. She is an active community volunteer and has received several awards for her service, including the Black Nursing Organizations of Maryland’s Harriet Tubman Living Legacy Award in Adult Health and the Kings Landing Humanitarian Award. She served two terms as the Vice President of the Baltimore chapter of the National Black Nurses Association. She is committed to pursuing a career in academia, research, and public policy both during and upon completion of her doctoral degree.

Sara Kuner-Henderson, RN, BSN

Biography

Sara Kuner – Henderson will graduate from the Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) program with a focus in Family Practice at the University of Louisville in August of 2020. Her pursuit of higher education was lead with the initiative to positively impact the local community by participating in primary care prevention. More specifically, Sara’s DNP project has an emphasis on home hygiene education among pediatric asthma patient caregivers. The goal of the project is to improve self-efficacy in a caregiver’s ability to transition their home to an asthma safe environment. Sara graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Louisville in May of 2016. During her undergraduate career she received guaranteed early admission to the School of Nursing (SON). Sara was actively involved in multiple SON activities; a few examples would include the Transition Ceremony, Florence Nightingale Awards Ceremony, and New Student Orientation. She participated in the international service learning program in Croatia, Europe and Botswana, Africa. She was granted an externship at Jewish Hospital in the Open-Heart Recovery Unit. She then served as President of the School of Nursing Student Government in her final year. Upon graduation, Sara was elected to represent the SON as the President’s Outstanding Graduate. Sara currently serves as a Registered Nurse Clinical Coordinator for Louisville Cardiology at Baptist Health in Louisville. She remains an active member in the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing.

Laurie Kunkel-Jordan, ANP-BC, CCRN, CNE

Biography

Laurie Kunkel-Jordan is a professional registered nurse and servant leader dedicated to the education and empowerment of a diverse nursing workforce. Laurie earned a baccalaureate degree in nursing from Alverno College in 2000 and a Master’s degree in nursing from Marquette University in 2005. Currently in pursuit of a PhD in nursing at Marquette University, she is a board-certified adult nurse practitioner, a certified nurse educator, and a certified critical care nurse. In addition to doctoral study, Laurie maintains a clinical practice in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Waukesha Memorial Hospital and a clinical faculty appointment at Carroll University. Selected exemplars of Ms. Kunkel-Jordan’s commitment to nursing excellence include: 2014 Patient Safety Nurse Fellow at the Zablocki Milwaukee VA Medical Center, 2012 Milwaukee Business Journal Eureka Award nomination, two Carroll University Pioneer Scholar Grant awards totaling approximately $10,000 to support the mentorship of undergraduate students in nursing research, 2006 Waukesha Memorial Hospital Heart Care Unit Nurse of the Year award, presentation of quality improvement projects and nursing research in critical care and nursing education at more than a dozen regional and national nursing conferences, and ongoing professional service as a manuscript reviewer for the journal, Nurse Education in Practice. Ms. Kunkel-Jordan’s current research includes qualitative studies aimed at exploring the lived experience of critical care nurse preceptors and newly graduated nurses transitioning to practice in the ICU and a meta-ethnography focused on the risk of attrition among minority nursing students.
