Krista Knudson, MSN, RN, ACNP

Yale University PhD
Biography

A clinician and aspiring nurse scientist, Ms. Knudson is a PhD candidate at Yale University. Ms. Knudson received her B.S.N. from Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin and M.S.N. (acute care nurse practitioner) from Yale. Her extensive training and practice background in acute care includes many years as a nurse and nurse practitioner in cardiac surgery intensive care units. Ms. Knudson first began to care for patients treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in 2009. ECMO is a complex rescue treatment, associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality, for patients with severe but potentially reversible heart and/or lung failure. Once reserved primarily for neonates and children, ECMO is now increasingly being used to treat adult patients. This highly technical therapy option presents unique challenges to patients and families; their experiences during and after treatment with ECMO are not well understood. The objective of Ms. Knudson’s doctoral research is to gain knowledge and insights about the ECMO experience from the perspectives of adult patients and their families. Her research findings will be used to identify opportunities for patient- and family-centered practice changes that may ultimately lead to improved patient outcomes. Ms. Knudson’s long-term goal is to develop a program of research centered on understanding and addressing needs of critically ill patients and their families. Ms. Knudson is a 2016-18 Jonas Nurse Scholar and 2016-18 Rockefeller University Heilbrunn Family Center for Research Nursing (HFCRN) Scholar.

Sandra Kreizenbeck, FNP, MSN, BSN, RN

University of San Francisco DNP
Biography

Sandra Kreizenbeck is currently enrolled at the University of San Francisco as a DNP student. She graduated from USF in 1997 with a BSN. After she graduated from USF, she served in both the Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom conflicts as an officer and nurse in the US Air Force. She got out as a Captain. She then worked as an RN case manager at VA Palo Alto Medical Center in the Polytrauma and Spinal Cord departments. Sandra obtained an FNP and a MSN from Holy Names University in 2012. She currently works as an FNP in an Autism clinic in Pleasanton, California. With the increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder and developmental delays, it is essential that more research be generated on the current research findings that correlate the exposure of toxicants to neurodevelopmental disorders. Sandra has identified a gap in the nursing research on treating clinician understanding on prevention and treatment of toxicant exposure. Sandra feels strongly that is essential that if treating clinicians understood environmental toxin exposure to the fullest, they could then educate their patient about its prevention and treatment, that in turn will hopefully decrease risk factors and ultimately produce better patient outcomes. Sandra’s DNP project assesses the understanding of a group of treating clinicians on the prevention and treatment of toxicant exposures. Based on her findings, Sandra will formulate an evidence-based teaching strategy for how to educate clinicians as a whole about preventing and treating toxicant exposure in their patients.
