Kristin Keller, MS, AOCNS, ACRN

Saint Louis University PhD
Biography

I am a second year PhD student at Saint Louis University School of Nursing. My area of interest is oncology. For my dissertation, I am planning to use a mixed methods design to study the practices of oncology nurses with regard to addressing smoking cessation amongst patients with a cancer diagnosis. I completed my BSN at the University of Virginia (2006) and received and MS from the University of California San Francisco (2010). I worked for 7 years as a staff RN in an inpatient oncology unit and outpatient infusion clinic at the San Francisco Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center. During this time, I became certified as an Advanced Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist (AOCNS) and an AIDS Certified Nurse (ACRN). Throughout my undergraduate and graduate education, I also frequented South Africa to volunteer as a nurse. My activities included working with nurses in a mobile health clinic to deliver care to rural communities, providing supplies to local daycare centers and orphanages, developing and implementing a clean water project with engineering students, and offering financial support to help complete a school building in a local community. I also took a seminar on global health through UCSF to deepen my understanding of this developing area of research. As an undergraduate at UVa, I had the honor of being selected to live on the Lawn and received the Raven Society Scholarship. Additionally, I have been the recipient of the Marion Bender Scholarship for PhD students at Saint Louis University.

Terri Khan

University of Nebraska Medical Center DNP
Biography

I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner completing my DNP. I have been a psychiatric nurse since 1988. I have had the privilege of working in multiple states, multiple levels of care and with patients through out the life span. I have 22 years of psychiatric nursing leadership experience. My highest achievement was to be the Operations Leader of Behavioral Health Services providing nursing supervision for inpatient, residential beds, and partial hospitalization programs in a multi facility organization. This organization had 5 metro hospitals in Nebraska. I served on multiple committees and represented behavioral services on the Chief Nursing Executive Committee. In 2012, I began practicing as a psychiatric APRN. Currently, I provide care at a community based mental health organization serving adults. The majority of my patients are indigent and about 80% have mental health and substance abuse diagnosis. Many of the patients are transitioning from acute psychiatric hospitalization to community based care. This transitional period is a critical vulnerable time for patient safety and engagement. The goal of my research is to design and implement a psychiatric transition model to improve patient safety and engagement in their care. There is a lack of transition models for psychiatric care, thus chronic care medical models have provided some framework. My experience in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care and leadership will be valuable to my research. I am hopeful that my research findings will provide a foundation to improve the safety of psychiatric patients.

Jason Kiernan

Wayne State University PhD
Biography

As an RN for nearly 20 years, and a nurse practitioner for nearly nine, I bring to my doctoral studies many years of practice in urban healthcare settings. As a new doctoral student, my area of interest is cancer symptomatology; more specifically, I am interested in investigating neutraceuticals and their effect on the symptoms associated with cancer and cancer treatment. I would like to begin with the well-known spice ginger and it’s potential as an adjunct for chemotherapy-related nausea. If this rhizome can accrue the positive data behind it, it would provide a low-cost adjunct to the worldwide problem of chemotherapy-induced nausea. My research training has involved working with Dr Jean Davis in 2005 on her research, “Exercise and Sleep: A Clinical Trial in Menopausal Women” and I am currently working with Dr Maher El-Masri at the University of Windsor on a study evaluating cancer screening avoidance behaviors.

Mara Killen

Thomas Jefferson School of Nursing DNP
Biography

I began my interest in caring for women as a research coordinator at the University of Pennsylvania running clinical trials designed to better the health of women. Eventually, desiring more responsibility and the credentials to manage patient care independently, I felt that becoming an NP specializing in women’s health would further that goal. To accomplish this I completed an accelerated BSN and Master’s program at the University of Pennsylvania. Since graduation, I have worked as a women’s health NP in a gynecology practice at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. I know that I will always want to provide direct patient care as I enjoy forming relationships with my patients, educating them, and furthering the goals of women’s health. I have always seen myself as a strong advocate for women’s care. During the past three years I have hosted a free cervical cancer screening day to promote Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. I have also completed a colposcopy course to further my expertise in the prevention of cervical cancer. While in school I spent time in West Virginia providing free Pap smears. The prevention of this disease will remain a priority for me as I continue my practice. I am eager to expand my practice to include leadership and teaching opportunities. I have already begun moving in this direction having recently been promoted to a supervisor for support staff. I chose the DNP program at Jefferson to equip me with the foundation and credentials to better qualify me as a leader in nursing.

Susan Kioko, NP, PCCN

Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing DNP
Biography

My name is Susan Kioko. I was born in Nairobi, Kenya and mothered by a registered nurse. Trained as a nurse in Kenya, my mother left the hospital wards soon after graduation and went into the community with her practice. She opened two donation-based clinics in poor, underserved communities, recruiting the financial support for basic health supplies and medication. I had my first nursing job at the age of seven, assisting my mother with community immunizations. These early training days are responsible for my involvement with community health initiatives during my secondary school and college years. Using a reconstructed medical van, we traveled to underserved communities throughout Kenya, providing immunizations, basic care, and health education. During this time I was also teaching at an HIV/AIDS children’s orphanage. I currently work as a charge nurse on a surgical unit. In this role I have developed and led initiatives to improve central line management and depression screening post-MI. I am a member of the hospital outcomes committee, through which I review specific patient cases and identify areas of improvement. I am pursuing a doctorate in nursing science having realized that my passion extends beyond clinical practice and into health care systems development in Kenya. My research interest is in the development of advanced practice nursing in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Kenya. I believe that the World Health Organization task shifting model for the management of HIV/AIDS in this region can be a catalyst for the development of advanced practice nursing.
