Dissertation: Among Hispanic spouses of United States Service Members, What are the risk and protective factors of resilience during deployment? How do these factors compare to the risk and protective factors identified in previous studies with a predominantly Caucasian sample? Military spouses experience much stress in their supportive role of their significant other through multiple moves, constant training and deployment. Evidence has shown that some spouses are resilient to the stressors surrounding them while others succumb to mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and substance abuse. Through the identification of risk and protective factors associated with resilience, prevention and intervention programs can be developed to assist the military spouse to be resilient during deployment.

Jonna Morris, PCCN

University of Pittsburgh PhD
Biography

I will be attending the University of Pittsburgh as a PhD student in the fall of 2014. I graduated from nursing school in 2007 and then for four years worked as a staff nurse on a busy telemetry unit caring for high acuity med/surge, cardiac, and respiratory patients. For the last three years I have been working on that same unit as an Assistant Nurse Manager. As a staff nurse, I took on leadership roles through the shared governance structure developed for our Magnet journey as chair of nursing quality and then coordinating council. While working I obtained my BSN at Penn state University. Many of the patients on my unit cope with chronic illness. I understand nurses have a critical role in helping them stay out of the hospital and live more fully. I hope through research to understand the complex interaction between patients and the healthcare system so that we can continue to help them improve their lives and stay outside the hospital.

Jill Muhrer, FNP

Yale University DNP
Biography

For the past 28 years, I have been providing primary care to a diverse underserved patient population through a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Camden, New Jersey. While I have enjoyed direct clinical services over the past years, I have been increasingly frustrated by the erosion of resources, and the obstacles I’ve faced in attempting to share high quality evidence-based health care to my patients. Despite successfully developing new policies in our FQHC on pain management, Coumadin management, and peer review evaluation, this is not sufficient. I now realize that I need to take a broader view of health care and to approach it on a “systems” level as well through health care policy development not only on a local level but also on state and national levels. This interest in changing health care policies has led to my enrollment in Yale University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program, which focuses on developing nurse leaders. In addition to my clinical practice, I have also been an adjunct faculty member at Widener University for 19 years where I provide on-site clinical supervision to students and also, facilitate clinical seminars to review ongoing clinical cases. As an educator, I am interested in promoting team-based learning, collaborative practice and transformational leadership. I have also devoted much of my career to writing and publishing both clinically focused articles and medical narratives that characterize particular patient issues. Finally, I have edited selected on line curriculum for undergraduate nursing students.
