Cynthia McCormack, MSN, RN

University of Massachusetts-Amherst PhD
Biography

My name is Cynthia McCormack and I am a Vermont native and nurse of 5 years. I have a background in critical care nursing and nursing education. I am passionate about global health and have focused much of my education and service work in global health nursing. My studies have brought me to Bangladesh, Belize, Ecuador, Rwanda, and Nicaragua. In Rwanda I provided post-operative nursing care to patients receiving heart valve replacements. This service work was a very tangible, rewarding experience for me and I plan to return to this project in the future. My research interests center around improving access to healthcare in developing countries where access is otherwise challenging. My most recent service trip to Nicaragua offered an opportunity to provide basic health services to impoverished communities via mobile clinics. I am continually engaged by what is possible and what is most needed in some of the developing countries where I have worked. Over the years I have built relationships with colleagues in the global health field and am looking forward to focusing my PhD research in this realm. I want to thank the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for selecting me as a Jonas Scholar and thank the Jonas Foundation for all of the fantastic support offered.

Kyle Merandy, RN, ANP-C

Stony Brook University DNP
Biography

From an early age, I have taken an interest in the welfare of others. Nursing has provided me an opportunity to effectively channel these personal attributes into a meaningful career.

I have worked thoughtfully and diligently to achieve consecutive levels of nursing competency. I started my nursing career as a licensed practical nurse and went on to become a registered nurse and adult nurse practitioner. Throughout my studies I have obtained an Associates degree in Applied Science followed by a Bachelors and Masters degree in Nursing.

I have been enjoying my work as a nurse practitioner at New York Presbyterian Hospital’s, Department of Urology for over seven years. I have chosen to pursue a doctoral education through Stony Brook University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program to play a larger role in patient outcomes. Through improved understanding of biostatistics and research I will be able to implement research studies, and provide more scholarly, evidence based care. I hope to use my skills to improve the lives of patients with bladder cancer, specifically those who have undergone a radical cystectomy (surgical removal of the bladder) with a urinary diversion. This demographic typically has a high rate of postoperative complications, prolonged length of stay, as well as high readmission rates. Through research and leadership projects I hope to look at different ways to improve care to these patients and ways of improving patient self-efficacy after surgery.
