Erica Mumm, MSN

Regis College DNP
Biography

As a nurse for 16 years and an educator for ten years, I am passionate about continuing my education at the Doctoral level. I chose to attend the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at Regis College because Regis offers a concentration in Integrative Health. With a teaching philosophy grounded in the works of Florence Nightingale and Barbra Carper and interests in mindfulness, yoga, and presence applied to nursing education strategies, I knew the Integrative Health track was the right fit. As an educator, my focus is on curriculum development and effective curriculum delivery. Using Nightingale’s philosophy and Carper’s work on “Personal Knowing” as a basis for deepening the learning experience, I bring integrative health techniques into the nursing curriculum through experiential learning. During my 16 years as a nurse, I have worked in a variety of clinical areas but found myself drawn to community health and subsequently education. I currently teach as an Assistant Professor of Nursing. I am a member of the American Holistic Nurses Association and The Association for Contemplative Mind in Higher Education. In 2003 I married an Army soldier and experienced first hand the joys and challenges of military life, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. As a doctoral student, driven to make a difference through my research, I am honored that I can blend my commitment to nursing education with my professional passion for integrative health and my personal passion of helping veterans with PTSD. I reside in New Hartford, CT with my family.

Komal Murali, MSN, ACNP-BC

New York University PhD
Biography

My experience in caring for seriously ill older adults with multiple chronic conditions (MCC)–as a clinician and educator in the critical care arena–has given me invaluable insight into the palliative care needs of this complex population. This experience has made clear that effective strategies in reducing symptom burden, improving health-related quality of life, and mitigating frequent healthcare utilization and rising healthcare costs are necessary. Palliative care focuses on symptom relief to improve the quality of life of seriously ill individuals. The evidence about palliative care for non-cancer seriously ill older adults with MCC requires further exploration and translating research findings into evidence-based best practices to help improve care for this population is imperative. While symptom alleviation and health-related quality of life in cancer patients can be improved via palliative care, there are clear gaps in translating this evidence to meet the needs of non-cancer, seriously ill older adults with MCC. In the next two years, I aim to compare these two distinct groups in terms of demographics, symptom profile, quality of life, healthcare utilization and cost. My hope is that my dissertation research will garner evidence upon which to ultimately create targeted palliative care approaches to improve symptom burden and quality of life, and reduce healthcare utilization and costs. With the help if the NYU CTSI and Jonas Scholarship, along with my research experiences in the PhD program at NYU Meyers, I hope to complete my dissertation and pursue an academic career as a nurse research scientist.

Dissertation: Symptom Profile, Health-Related Quality of Life, and healthcare utilization of Seriously Ill Older Adults with Multiple Chronic Conditions Receiving Palliative Care: The purpose of this proposed exploratory secondary data analysis is to describe demographics, clinical characteristics, symptom burden, health-related quality of life, and health care utilization and costs of a) non-cancer seriously ill older adults with MCC over the age of 65 who have received palliative care during an index inpatient hospital stay compared to b) seriously ill older adults with cancer who have received palliative care during an indexed inpatient hospital stay. Data will be extracted from electronic medical records and include all palliative care patients seen within the last 3 years in two different tertiary care settings with mature palliative care programs. After identifying the two populations of interest in the electronic medical records, corresponding Medicare A claims data will be analyzed to conduct cost analyses.

Linda Murray, PCNB

University of Maryland DNP
Biography

My career has spanned over three decades in which I have assumed a several roles within nursing. Beginning my career as a staff nurse and moving on to the role of a clinical unit educator provided me with the experience to progress to a hospital staff development coordinator. Due to an intense desire to develop my clinical interaction with pediatric clients I chose to pursue a Post Master’s Certificate program for my Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. After working for almost eight years within private practice I moved back to the educational arena as an assistant professor of nursing at the community college level. Here I was able to combine my passion for nursing with teaching. I served in a leadership capacity as the Assistant Director of the Nursing Program at the community college for almost 6 years before moving to a full time faculty position at the University of Maryland in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program. Once again, I am able to combine my passion for nursing and teaching and provide mentorship for nurses as they transition to the nurse practitioner role. My DNP scholarly project will center on role transitions for NP’s and the need for mentoring. Upon completion of the DNP program at the University of Maryland, I hope to continue in a nursing faculty role with a focus in two major areas: inter-professional education and development in nurses of advocacy skills related to patients and the nursing profession.

Nicole Murry, BSN, RN

University of Texas-Austin PhD
Biography

Nicole Murry, BSN, RN, is pursuing a PhD in Nursing with a focus on health literacy. As a nurse educator in the Neonatal Intensive Care, Nicole observed that when the delivery of health information was tailored to meet the needs of parents, which often included clear verbal and written communication, patients and parents fared better. These same observations were echoed throughout her work as a graduate assistant and project manager for a large-scale study focused on health literacy and self-care behaviors of approximately 400 patients within a federally qualified health center. And when she transitioned to a position working with healthcare leaders across the state, she learned that meeting the health literacy needs of patients is a common challenge among healthcare organizations. Committed to system level solutions to address the health literacy needs of all patients, her dissertation will result in the development of a tool designed to measure healthcare organizational attributes related to patient health literacy. Her hope is that by using this tool, healthcare organizations can begin to systematically and efficiently address the practices within their system that place an unnecessary health literacy burden on the patients they serve.

Abby Mutic, MSN, CNM

Emory University PhD
Biography

Nursing is a calling and develops after a strong desire to lead people toward well-being. Over the past five years, I have been privileged to assist moms and babies during the most empowering event of their lives: childbirth. As a lifelong learner, I felt compelled to become a researcher, close the clinical research gap that persists, and translate literature into clinical practice changes. My unique academic experiences have provided me with a diverse background with which to pursue my doctoral education. I chose to enhance my undergraduate biology studies with psychology, leading to a focused biobehavioral discipline. Later, I focused on maternal-child nursing receiving a MSN specializing in nurse-midwifery. Working with high poverty rates and women with poor health awareness, I developed an interest in identifying chemical risk factors adversely affecting pregnant women and children. A building body of literature is exposing environmental toxicants to be harmful in pregnancy perturbing the gut microbiome. Emerging data states environmental toxicants are possibly linked to neurological delays in the developing fetus. I plan to expand this literature by investigating the how exogenous toxicants perturb the normalcy of a pregnant microbiome potentiating poor mental health outcomes. While at Emory, I have been building foundational research skills in data collection, management, analysis, and dissemination. Specifically, I am privileged to work with a large birth cohort living in urban Atlanta and with vulnerable occupational groups across Florida. Working with multidisciplinary teams has given me the experience and skills I need to be a successful research scientist.

University of South Florida PhD
Biography

In August of 2018, I will begin the PhD Program in Nursing Science at the University of South Florida (USF). I became a registered nurse in 2014 and prior to transitioning into nursing I obtained a Master of Public Health in Global Communicable Disease and spent several years employed as a microbiologist at USF where my main research focus was on the malaria parasite. Though I transitioned from a research scientist into a bedside nurse, I continued to have an interest in public health and the infectious subset of communicable diseases. As I contemplated furthering my education in nursing, I explored the options available and decided on pursuing a PhD in nursing. The PhD in Nursing Science program at USF affords me the luxury of combining my interests in nursing, infectious disease, public health, and research. One of the current funded research projects within the College of Nursing at USF focuses on ophthalmic health in Toxoplasma gondii infected Hispanic pregnant women. Aspects of this project are in sync with my research interests and the plan is to complete my dissertation research as a part of this funded project. I look forward to beginning the PhD program in Nursing Science at USF and I am very honored to have been chosen as a Jonas Scholar for 2018-2020.
