Dissertation: Implementation of an electronic reminder in the EHR to increase provider compliance in prescribing statins to adults with lower extremity PAD. Adult patients with lower extremity peripheral artery disease are at risk for adverse cardiac events. Despite the guidelines, many of these patients are not on statin therapy. I am working with a partner on the capstone project and we will measure whether or not implementation of an electronic reminder in the EHR increases provider compliance to recommended guidelines for prescribing statin medications to this patient population.

Sharon Martin, BSN, RN

Arizona State University DNP
Biography

Sharon Martin is a hematology/ oncology RN at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, AZ and a DNP student at Arizona State University. A nurse with a passion for palliative care, Sharon was chosen by her unit at Mayo Clinic to attend the End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Train the Trainer Conference in 2015. As an ELNEC educator, Sharon has helped host multiple palliative nursing education events at Mayo Clinic. Seeing the complex psycho-social strain patients and families endure after a terminal diagnosis has instilled in her a desire to explore how nurses can better manage the mental health of their patients. She is especially interested in how structured Life Review can positively impact traditional palliative care. Using reminiscence and story-telling, Sharon’s Life Review project will help veterans with a terminal diagnosis integrate meaning in their lives, decrease depressive symptoms, and improve quality of life. Through educating providers and nurses about Life Review and the benefits of meaningful communication at end of life, Sharon hopes to sustain continued research and implementation of this valuable evidence-based intervention. With the support of the Jonas Center and a highly regarded DNP education from Arizona State University, Sharon’s Life Review project will directly benefit a high priority veterans’ healthcare issue and help define her role as an advanced practice nurse leader in palliative care.

Dale Mathis, BSN RN CMSRN

Photo of Dale Mathis BSN RN CMSRN
University of Missouri-St. Louis PhD
Biography

I am currently enrolled in the BSN-PhD program at UMSL-St. Louis with an interest in helping research interventions and solutions for veterans as they transition from service to civilian life. I served in the U.S. Army as a combat medic for 8 years with deployments to Afghanistan, during which I maintained NREMT certification and completed various military and homeland security coursework. The last two years of service I worked with trainees at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and was able to gain an appreciation for the stressors involved in the transition into service; on leaving the Army I gained firsthand knowledge of the system that churns out personnel, which along with my patients and friends experiences, I have gained an even finer appreciation for the issues involved. While in nursing school I was accepted into the VALOR student nurse program at VHA-St. Louis where I worked on a telemetry floor and attended classes on wound care and attained ACLS certification. After Passing the NCLEX I was accepted into the Transition to Practice Program at the VHA where I rotated through different specialty units, worked the floor in medsurg, and completed an EBP curriculum. After successfully completing the program I transitioned into a full time position as a Staff Nurse where I currently work, helping to improve the care provided and assisting with staff improvement concerns.

Daniel McAlvin

New York University DNP
Biography

Daniel McAlvin has been a practicing psychiatric NP for 5 years, and a psychiatric nurse for over 8 years, having graduated from Columbia University’s School of Nursing. His first nursing position was at New York Presbyterian’s inpatient psychiatric unit. Working in this intensive environment offered him years of hands-on experience in patient-focused care, safety, education, as well as exposure to motivated and knowledgeable talent from many disciplines. Born of this was a more cognizant and appreciative outlook not just towards his direct clinical contributions, but how health care systems — research, evidence-based practice, access and quality, awareness and literacy — function in their interdependent ways to constantly strive towards improvement in the face of multiple obstacles and challenges.

It was during this period that he was also pursuing his Masters of Nursing. This program afforded him further study of evidence-based practice as well as the opportunity to engage with multiple health care milieus. Witnessing the work non-profits do serving the underserved here in New York demonstrated to him the true immensity of long-standing health care challenges and the vigorous commitment individuals and organizations take to meet them head-on.

Upon starting his nurse practitioning career, he embarked at a non-profit mental health care center in midtown New York named St. Paul’s Center, which was founded by an alumnus of Columbia’s nursing program, and entirely composed of NP clinicians. St. Paul’s Center provided mental health treatment to the city’s homeless, at-risk-for-homelessness and teenagers ejected from their homes. In the course of his work there, he found himself on the front-lines of healthcare and social support disparities. It was a headlong education in strengths and limitations of healthcare and social service resources desperately needed for the underserved. The experience burnished within him an appreciation of the systemic challenges of our nation’s healthcare system and the need for socially-aware nurses to lead the charge to right them.

Since 2012, Daniel has been working at NYU’s student health center as a NP at its counseling service. It has been a unique privilege to work with a diverse young adult population faced with their own particular developmental circumstances and needs. Alongside a staff who demonstrate a real commitment to health care quality, safety, student satisfaction, public education and prevention, he has been engaged with multiple evidenced-based and quality improvement initiatives such as ADHD treatment guidelines, genetic testing, prevention of adverse medication reactions, dialectical-behavior therapy, patient-to-provider communication and staff education.

Daniel also is a clinical instructor at Columbia University’s School of Nursing, teaching new waves of psychiatric nurses in psychiatric assessment. In addition, he precepts graduate psychiatric NP students at NYU. He finds teaching immensely rewarding, and considers it a necessary contribution to the profession.

Daniel is now in his first year of pursuing a DNP degree at NYU’s College of Nursing. He hopes enhance his clinical, research and healthcare-systems knowledge, but also demonstrate to healthcare consumers and the public at large his commitment to being an active participant in providing quality healthcare, and to help lead change.

Masters of Nursing Science, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program, October 2010
