Educational preparation includes a BA from UCI in Social Ecology with minors in Psychology and Social Behavior as well as a BSN from USC in Nursing Science. Work experience includes 10 years adult critical care bedside experience in SICU, MICU and Trauma Medicine. Additionally, functioned in several leadership roles focusing on strengthening multi-disciplinary team coordination and improving patient outcomes including: Rapid Response RN, code blue team, root cause analysis, tracer methodology, quality improvement and JCAHO/CADPH unit preparation. Also worked adjunct clinical faculty for both BSN and MSN Nursing students at the University level, where I discovered a passion for teaching. Recently, chosen to speak at the XXVII World Congress of The International Association for Suicide Prevention, Oslo Norway September, 2013. Topic encompassed suicide among the Dakota Sioux, which remain some of the highest rates worldwide. Clinical and research interests include knowledge synthesis and translation of best practices to indigenous communities, researchers and public policy-makers to improve health outcomes, morbidity and quality of life for these unique populations. Clinical Translational Science as a method for communicating best practices is also of great interest in the area of Health Disparities among NAAI populations because of the collaborative nature of the scientific approach. Indigenous populations suffer from the knowledge gap between science and their worldview. I hope to bridge this gap in a manner that both pleases science and the populations I serve.

Chuck Reuter, APHN

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey PhD
Biography

Once I received my nursing license, I immediately began working int he emergency department at Community Medical Center in Toms River, New Jersey; followed shortly therafter working per diem on the inpatient psychiatric unit at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold. Once I gained the necessary experience, I left the emergency department to work as a critical care transport nurse. My educational goals did not wane, and I continued with the baccalaureate program at Kean University followed directly by the master’s program also with Kean University. In 2009 I joined the New Jersey Army National Guard, and was a direct commission as a second lieutenant. While there, I built a database for tracking the medical records of New Jersey soldiers, started the unit newsletter and built the unit website. In 2012 I was selected by the New Jersey State Surgeon to be the Army Public Health Nurse for the state, and completed the training at Fort Sam Houston in conjunction with Texas A&M. As an officer in the New Jersey Army National Guard, I am driven by the Army values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. These values, while shared by many who serve our country, are what drive me personally, and to help others who serve. Suicide in the Army has become very bewildering, confounded by the ever increasing rate in the National Guard. My current research is aimed at identifying biomarkers for suicide with the aim of identifying those at risk.

Justin Reyes, BSN, RN, PHN

University of California-Irvine PhD
Biography

I am currently a student at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) in the Nursing Science Doctor of Philosophy program under the mentorship of Dr. Alison Holman, Ph.D. and Dr. Steven Cramer, M.D. My interests within the arena of stroke research emanates from my professional career as a registered nurse, serving the population of Orange County through Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. As an alumnus of the UCI’s Nursing Science Program, I was proficiently prepared to immerse into the clinical setting, providing strategically organized care as a surgical nurse. Subsequently, I seized the opportunity to transition into a care management role, serving as a discharge planning liaison between the inpatient and community settings. This opportunity uncovered my passion in providing both tailored education and individualized discharge strategies across a uniquely diverse population of post-stroke survivors. Health disparities in Orange County are evident in the real-world setting, lending to each individual requiring a distinct approach; it is this uniqueness that inspires my future study path. At Hoag Hospital, I served as a unit representative for Clinical Practice Council, collaborating with both nursing education and infection prevention in translating research into practice policy and protocol to reduce hospital-acquired infection rates. As an alumnus of UCI, I have earned both my B.S.N. in Nursing Science in 2013, Deans Honor List and B.S. in Biology in 2009, Deans Honor List. I served as a board member of the Alpha class in Alpha Tau Delta’s UCI chapter and continue mentoring undergraduate nursing students at UCI.

Eleanor Rivera, MSN, RN

University of Illinois at Chicago PhD
Biography

I am a PhD student at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing. I am currently a Bridges to the Doctorate student, an NIH-funded grant to increase the diversity of PhD-prepared faculty in nursing. I received my MSN at DePaul University in 2013, and have since been working as a staff nurse at Saint Anthony Hospital for the past 2 years. My experience there and my passion for patient education have inspired my research interest in the the empowerment of patients to improve their self-care. My dissertation research will focus on adults diagnosed with chronic illness and their perception of that illness (called illness representation, which includes concepts such as timeline, level of personal control, etc.) My hypothesis is that there are distinct clusters characterized by similar illness representation profiles which differentially predict self-care management, ER visits, and hospitalizations. I am particularly interested in whether persons with different diseases (COPD, kidney disease and heart failure) are equally represented across the different profiles. The results of my dissertation will inform future interventions that are tailored to specific illness representation profiles which are associated with positive or negative outcomes. As a student at DePaul, I was chosen to present a poster of my master’s research at the MNRS Conference in 2014. That project examined the relationship between the performance of proactive health behaviors and perceptions of their relative importance. I was selected to attend a summer research institute at the University of Pennsylvania in summer of 2016.
