Basilia Basin, BS, RN-BC, PhD Candidate

Oregon Health and Science University Hartford Center PhD
Biography

I am a clinical nurse, educator, and leader with experience caring for older adults with chronic disease. Prior to nursing, I was a licensed small animal veterinary technician. My experience as a nurse and a technician provides a unique perspective, and expertise, to research the relationship between older adults and pets and their influence on decision-making. Furthermore, my specialized interest in older adults with pets is aligned with the Gerontological Society of America’s research priorities in human-animal interaction. My PhD core coursework is complete and I successfully defended the dissertation proposal. During the course work I worked closely as a research assistant with a nurse focused on gerontological transitional care. I recruited participants, collected and analyzed data. This mentored position provided real-world experience about the research process. Additionally, I am actively involved as a student leader who reinvigorated the Graduate Nursing Senate. I organized quarterly meetings and encouraged all graduate nursing students to attend; participation has been exceptional. Furthermore, I also work as a nurse educator. As a nurse educator I participate in shared governance and lead many education projects for the whole organization. Recently, I shared education about nurse peer feedback and won an award for an informational poster about peer feedback. Overall, I am a nurse who is dedicated to the lives of older adults, elevating the nursing profession and leading the way in human-animal interaction research of older adults.

Tammy Bathke

University of California-Los Angeles PhD
Biography

From 2009-2013 I served as Assistant Director of the associate degree nursing program at College of the Canyons (COC), a California Community College. Mentorship with key leaders at COC accelerated my understanding of the big picture of nursing academia. My qualifications in applying for the Jonas Leadership Fellowship include that my Master of Science in Nursing degree is in nursing education. I have extensive curriculum experience. Most noteworthy is the curriculum revision process that took place during my position as assistant director at the COC Nursing Program. This thorough revision incorporated Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) competencies as a major guiding force in developing the program outcomes which were then threaded through every course. As Assistant Director, I worked closely with struggling students and I developed remediation plans to help them. I currently teach lecture as well as med/surg and psychiatric nursing clinicals. The doctoral study at UCLA will facilitate my career goal to teach and do research at a large reputable university. I plan to generate evidenced based practice involving positive health outcomes and methods of promoting well-being. My proposed research has the primary goal of describing the relationship between the concept of eudaimonic well-being and mental health symptoms in Latino college students. Latinos represent a growing population with disparities that exist in areas including health outcomes as well as academia. Based on theory and recent advances in science, it is hypothesized that eudaimonic well-being can serve as an avenue of future interventions.

Dissertation: Advance Directives for Young Adults Living with Neuromuscular Disease
Due to medical advances, children with neuromuscular disease (NMD) who once had limited life-expectancies are now surviving into adulthood (Schrans et al., 2013). The transition from pediatric care to adult care is an appropriate opportunity for healthcare providers to discuss care preferences and goals with young adults who have NMD, but advance care planning is often overlooked during this time (Birnkrant et al., 2018).

In the absence of documented advanced directives, young adults with NMD are at risk for dying without having their wishes known (Hiscock, Kuhn, & Barclay, 2017), despite studies showing the physiological and psychological benefits of discussing and planning for end of life (Abbott, Prescott, Forbes, Fraser, & Majumdar, 2017). This kind of support is not routinely offered to young adults with NMD, making it, in turn, more difficult to discuss these topics within families (Abbott, et al., 2017). Not discussing or documenting advance directives not only adds to undue suffering for families, which creates ethical dilemmas, but also potentially increases unnecessary healthcare costs at the end-of-life (Dixon, Matosevic, & Knapp, 2015).

Meredith Bell, RN, BSN, LNC

University of Kansas DNP
Biography

I started the DNP program in January 2013 with a specialty in Adult Geriatric Nurse Practitioner. I graduated with an associates degree in nursing from Hillsborough Community College in 2001. I completed my BSN in 2008 from the University of South Florida. During my ASN program I was one of two students awarded for academic excellence in nursing. After my associate’s degree I began working in a pediatric cardiovascular floor at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida. After my baccalaureate I began working at a level one trauma center in the neuroscience intensive care unit where I had the opportunity to care for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Most recently, as a graduate teaching assistant (GTA) I have observed how students have utilized simulations to learn how to provide patient care. These simulations have given students the opportunity to practice in a safe environment that increases their knowledge and confidence. In addition, while a student at KUMC I had the opportunity to attend a sponsored simulation education conference for interdisciplinary healthcare professionals. At the University of Kansas School of Nursing, I will have the opportunity to work with one faculty member that has expertise in TBI and one that has expertise in informatics and educational simulation. With the guidance of these two experts I hope to explore how to develop a residency module for doctoral nursing practice students to help them in identification and diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury through an educational simulation.
