Ella Archibald, FNP, MS

Pace University DNP
Biography

I grew up in the family of healthcare professionals. Since childhood I was mesmerized by their dedication to make a difference in people’s lives. It has been the most meaningful and important profession for me. During my student years and career I have taken pride and enjoyment in learning more and working harder than others. Despite this sense of ambition, I am always compassionate with my patients and my coworkers. During my eight years of experience working as a medical doctor in Ukraine, I was fortunate to excel in my career and obtain a position as Vice President of the Regional Cherkassy Hospital. Besides seeing patients in the hospital, I provided field consultations to poor and marginalized population in distant areas of the region. During 1998-2000 I worked on a dissertation and conducted a research study on occupational disease occurrence in Cherkassy chemical factory. I changed my life and career by emigrating to the United States in 2000. Working in Lenox Hill Hospital for 10 years gave me invaluable experience of the advanced American health care system. From my experience, I believe that a multi sector approach with collaboration of different services makes tremendous difference in nursing. I use this approach in my daily practice. The DNP program, through conducting research and teaching, further enhanced my skills and ability to address the most important aspects of my patients’ lives.

Katelin Arnold, BSN, N, PCCN

University of Michigan-Flint DNP
Biography

I chose to go into nursing to serve in rural and small US communities. I currently serve as a clinical educator and charge nurse at a long-term acute care hospital, which is the facility of choice in our area for ventilator weaning and advanced treatment of patients, including veterans, of all ages. Additionally, I am the Pathway to Excellence project director for our facility, as we just submitted our document to make us candidates for the Pathway to Excellence designation. My research will be based around the need for better patient and staff education about advanced directives, better systems to transmit these directives, and following directives based on patient preferences. In my current facility, we see many families and patients struggling with end-of-life decisions after the patient has been critically ill for an extended period of time. With amazing technology and the ability to access our patients’ healthcare record at every stage in care, why is an advance directive so difficult to make portable? Why are healthcare providers afraid to talk about end of life? How can we make this better?

Dissertation: Title: Overdose Prevention Education and Naloxone Access in a Primary Care Clinic in Washington DC Brief description: The opioid epidemic is seizing the United States and DC is no exception. Opioid overdose fatalities are preventable with timely administration of naloxone—a cheap, safe, and effective prescription medication that reverses an opioid overdose and only an opioid overdose. However, there are significant gaps in implementation of community-based overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) throughout DC. The DNP project will seek to implement a community-based OEND in a primary care clinic in Washington DC.
