Darla Chapman, RN

University of Washington DNP
Biography

I am a registered nurse with nearly 20 years of professional nursing experience across many health care settings including acute care, home health and hospice, ambulatory care, and clinical research. For the last past 15 years I have worked within the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) and the Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) at the Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) in Seattle. I have worked closely with a team of geriatricians, neurologists, psychiatrists, and neuropsychologists to provide care to those newly diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia, and to promote and participate in the delivery of care and clinical research focusing on these disorders. In September 2013 I began my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) coursework at the University of Washington School of Nursing. Obtaining an advanced nursing degree focusing on the care of adults and older adults, combined with my ongoing experience and subspecialty in neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive disability, will enable me to care for patients on a broader level and practice as a nurse practitioner in a variety of settings, including primary care, long-term care, home health, clinical research, or within a neurology specialty. Upon graduation, I hope to combine my role as an advanced practice nurse with those of researcher and educator who leads care and research that will contribute to new evidenced-based practices and improve the health and outcomes for our nation’s aging veterans

Monalesia Chapman, RN, MSN

University of North Carolina-Greensboro PhD
Biography

Monalesia Chapman is a PhD student in the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Monalesia has worked in the nursing profession for 24 years with experience in medical-surgical, oncology, and staff development. She received her Master of Nursing from UNC-Greensboro, after completing her undergraduate degree at UNC-Chapel Hill. Monalesia has been employed at the Durham VA Healthcare System in Durham, NC for 16 years. The last ten years she has worked as a Nursing Professional Development Specialist, currently over Ambulatory Care Services. She is a VHA certified mentor and serves on the Evidence-Based Practice Committee. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society and a member of AACR (American Association for Cancer Research). She was an active participant of the development of the ECHO (Elder Care Hospital Program) at the Durham VA and coordinator of the RN-to Transition Program for new graduates. Monalesia’ s dissertation research will examine the HRQoL of CRC survivors in the Veteran population after their first year of treatment. With the VA being the largest healthcare system that provides cancer care in the United States, and a large percentage of colorectal cancer among those Veterans, determing the HRQoL for CRC survivors is critical. She is also interested because there have been few studies that have focused on the HRQoL among the Veteran population. Findings from this study can be used to inform intervention work with this population to improve their quality of life after cancer treatment.

Notes

Research/Clinical Practice Area: Jonas Veterans Healthcare Scholar – Community-based Care
Dissertation: “Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Veterans with colorectal cancer (CRC) after their first year of treatment.” With the VA being the largest healthcare system that provides cancer care in the United States, and because Veterans with CRC accounts for 9% of the 20% of all cancer among Veterans, determing the HRQoL for CRC survivors living in the community is critical. There is an increased survival rate associated with CRC due to early detection from screening, and new and improved treatment plans, but few studies have focused on the health-related quality of life of survivors, particularly among the Veteran population. My dissertation research will be a quantitative study examining the HRQoL of CRC survivors at the Durham VA Healthcare System. Findings from this study can be used to inform intervention work with this population to improve their quality of life after cancer treatment. This will be especially important for the Community clinic providers, staff, patients, and families.

Jade is a first-generation college graduate from Louisville, Kentucky. In 2015, she earned her BSN with Honors from UofL. While completing her BSN, she was involved in a research study about the relationship of sociodemographic characteristics with depression, anxiety, and stress in African American adults with T2DM as a School of Nursing Undergraduate Research Scholar. She presented undergraduate student posters in 2015 at an Undergraduate Research Symposium and Midwest Nursing Research Society conference. Her research interests include addressing health promotion and disease prevention in vulnerable populations through the development of strategies to increase nursing workforce diversity. She currently works as a Graduate Research Assistant and is a part of the inaugural cohort of UofL Health and Social Justice Scholars. As an HSJS, she is using a Social Determinants perspective in examining factors that influence academic success among minority students who enter into nursing. Shu Wen Cheng, RN, BSN, CCRN

University of Kansas DNP
Biography

I was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. I was the fifth of six children. I had a natural interest in foreign places and peoples. To this end, I pursued and obtained a degree in Japanese Language and Culture and worked for an international company. Some years after I began my working life my mother was diagnosed with cancer. I took the role of caregiver and oversaw my mother’s treatment and care until she died several years after her diagnosis. Some years later I found myself married and raising two children while operating my own business when my husband had a heart attack and died right in front of me. The death of my mother and my husband made an indelible impression in my mind. Two years later I found myself in Fort Scott, KS with my two children. We all struggled to learn the language and understand the culture. I struggled to house, clothe and feed us as I worked as much as the law allowed and at the same time pursued my associate’s degree in nursing. Had I had the knowledge of life support I gained in my nursing when my husband had his heart attack it is likely he would still be alive today. I am now pursuing my DNP in an effort to give back to the people of this country in some small way what it has given to me and my children.
