Ka Blia Lo, BSN, RN

Photo of Ka Blia Lo BSN, RN
The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill DNP
Biography

I am a BSN to DNP family nurse practitioner student at UNC Chapel Hill, and my practice of interests involves serving the Hmong community. I am Hmong and I’m able to connect with the Hmong to help individuals comprehend their health and navigate the US Healthcare System. I am motivated to learn more about healthcare within my doctoral studies, so I can serve as a bridge between my culture and modern medicine. As new immigrants, America’s population of Hmong nurse practitioners is currently low. My DNP project will be focusing on risk factors such as cultural diet, lifestyle behaviors, and diabetes management of the Hmong to improve outcomes in chronic diseases. My background in emergency nursing has led me to understand how healthcare currently operates: the majority of patients’ only seeking care at their worse health condition. As an aspiring practitioner, I hope to make a difference in our local and global community by shedding light on what is most important: helping people value the significance of health prevention measures. Presently, I have been invited to join Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. My accomplishments further inspire me to achieve my ultimate goal in educating underserved communities about preventative health and wellness.

Patrick Lohse, BSN, RN, PMHNP/DNP student

Photo of Patrick Lohse BSN, RN, PMHNP/DNP student
Oregon Health and Science University DNP
Biography

Pat is currently in the DNP track of the PMHNP program at OHSU. He has worked as an RN on the Trauma & Surgical ICU at OHSU for the last 4 years after obtaining his BSN with summa cum laude honors in 2014. As an RN, he was an active member of the Unit-Based Nursing Practice Council on the TSICU for more than 2 years. He contributed on multiple process improvement projects, spearheading one aimed at cost-containment through improving the decision making process around the necessity of daily lab collection. During his time working as an RN in critical care, he witnessed the often profoundly negative health consequences of poorly managed or unmanaged mental illness. These experiences led him toward the PMHNP program, because he realized that helping people get the mental health care they need earlier could help them avoid the painful and costly consequences that arise down the road. Pat is open to a variety of clinical experiences going forward, but his specialty interests currently include pain management and substance dependency, which are the areas he hopes to focus his energy for his DNP project.

Elizabeth Lorenzo, BSN, RN

Arizona State University PhD
Biography

I have been a registered nurse for the past sixteen years and worked primarily in cardiovascular surgery and as a quality nurse analyst conducting chart reviews related to pharmacological adverse events. I recently completed my second year in the BSN to PhD track doctoral program at Arizona State University. Since beginning the program in 2014, I have been working as a Graduate Research Assistant each semester to gain invaluable mentored research experience from various renowned scientists. I recently was awarded the lead Graduate Research Assistantship by my mentor, Dr. Rebecca Lee, on her newly funded NIH U01 grant “Partnering for Physical Activity in Early Childhood: Sustainability via Active Garden Education.” This has allowed me to leave my career as a practicing nurse to fully immerse myself in conducting a large-scale research study from start-up throughout the remainder of my dissertation. I will conduct my dissertation as a side study aligned with this project investigating active transportation use, walkability of the built environment, and healthcare access and utilization related to cardiometabolic outcomes and physical activity levels among predominantly Hispanic/Latina female caretakers.
