Biography

I am currently enrolled as a Doctorate of Philosophy student at the University of Missouri Kansas City. I received a Master of Science in Nursing degree and certification as a women’s health care nurse practitioner from the University of Cincinnati. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and Associate Degree in Nursing from Miami University. I hold a full-time position as an Associate Professor at Good Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science in Cincinnati, Ohio. During my eleven years serving in this role, I have been committed to improving student learning outcomes through the use of varied teaching-learning strategies. I have presented at regional and national nursing education conferences, sharing my knowledge regarding the utilization of creative and innovative teaching methods. In 2010, I was recognized for my dedication to educating and preparing future nurses when I received the DAISY Faculty Award. I facilitate a multi-cultural student nurse support group and serve as a mentor for minority nursing graduates as they transition to the role of the professional nurse. The majority of my nursing career has been focused on caring for and improving the lives of women. I maintain a part-time position as a women’s health care nurse practitioner, providing examinations and education to under-served women in the community. I volunteer and am actively involved with several community organizations. My area of research involves factors which influence the critical thinking development of undergraduate nursing students.

Lisa Harrison earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Boston College and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Fairfield University. Prior to earning her Master of Science in nursing from Stony Brook University, Ms. Harrison held several nursing leadership positions in home care and psychiatric and substance abuse treatment programs. She currently works as a psychiatric nurse practitioner with children, adolescent, and adults in inpatient and outpatient settings. She also is a graduate assistant at the University of Connecticut School of Nursing where she is a student in the Doctor of Philosophy program. Her research interests include employee engagement, resilience, ethics, and quality improvement in nursing.

I obtained my Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing from Clemson University. After enjoying an adjunct clinical instructor position at an ADN school, I returned to The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) for my Masters of Science in Nursing with a focus in nursing education. While holding a full-time instructor position at the University of South Carolina-Upstate and adjunct faculty position at Clemson University, I decided to pursue my doctorate to continue to learn and expand my knowledge of nursing research and education. My love for and ten years experience in oncology lead me to the Interdisciplinary Healthcare Genetics PhD program at Clemson University. While working on the didactic portion of my doctorate, I have worked with faculty, other doctoral students, and undergraduate students on research to assess genetics within the nursing curricula at Clemson University’s School of Nursing. I have been able to present this research at Sigma Theta Tau’s 42nd Biennial Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana for Rising Stars, and the Southern Nurses Research Society (SRNS) 2014 conference in San Antonio, TX. At SRNS, the poster was awarded a student research award by the SRNS Education RIG. Last, I have had the opportunity to be a mentor for an undergraduate research Creative Inquiry group where our research was accepted for poster presentation at the 2014 National Council on Undergraduate Research Conference (NCUR) in Lexington, KY. My current research and dissertation focus is on increasing genetic education for nursing students and nursing faculty.

Jessica Hatch is a DNP student at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) interested in mining data to improve care delivery models for Maternal and Child Health. Jessica is currently employed as a Business Analyst at the Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC), a non-profit organization providing advisory and implementation services in health IT to government agencies, private organizations, and multi-stakeholder communities. At MAeHC Ms. Hatch advises on population health strategies, alternative payment models, data integration, quality reporting, and health information exchange to facilitate care coordination and improve outcomes. Prior to joining MAeHC, Ms. Hatch led the operationalization of state and federal community hospital grants focused on complex care management and delivery system transformation, including the Section 1115 Medicaid Waiver program at Lawrence General Hospital in Massachusetts. She also led Lawrence General’s successful attestation to Meaningful Use Stage 2 as their Health Information Exchange Integration Manager. The foundation of her clinical background in health promotion, care management, and dynamic care delivery models began as a registered nurse in a New Hampshire community health center, Lamprey Health Care. At Lamprey Ms. Hatch spearheaded care transitions and care management workflows, directly assisting in their NCQA Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home recognition. Ms. Hatch graduated from the UNH’s Direct Entry Master’s in Nursing Program as a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL), after receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Sciences and a minor in Healthcare Administration and Policy. She recently completed a post-masters certificate in Nursing Informatics.

Biography

Debi Hatton received her first degree, a BS in Accounting, from the University of Kentucky. Debi worked for several years in various finance roles before deciding to pursue her nursing degree. After receiving her Accelerated BSN from Bellarmine University, she worked as a Medical Surgical/Progressive Care nurse at the University of Louisville Hospital. During that time, she attended Duke University where she received her MSN with a focus in Nursing Education. Debi is currently pursuing her PhD in Nursing at Indiana University. She is also employed as an adjunct nursing faculty at Bellarmine University. Her teaching interests include medical surgical nursing along with both clinical and simulation instruction. Debi is a member of the National League for Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International and the Academy for Medical Surgical Nurses. Debi’s doctoral research is focused on examining the use of a structured debriefing strategy, Debriefing for Meaningful Learning, as a way to enhance knowledge creation and clinical reasoning skills in undergraduate nursing students.

I am currently enrolled as a full- time student in the PhD program at the University of Utah, College of Nursing. As a nurse practitioner with a focus on oncology clinical trials, my experience spans more than two decades working with an urban undeserved population in the Bronx, NY. My dedication to these patients is evidenced by my participation in community outreach such as the coordination of community health fairs in the federal low- income housing projects and for more than 20 years, the annual Survivor’s Day luncheon for cancer survivors and their families from the surrounding neighborhoods. I am instrumental in the training of study coordinators and education of ancillary staff to ensure study procedures are maintained at a large multi-site academic center in the Bronx. I facilitate the dissemination of accurate and timely information concerning accrual and progress toward the goals of the project. I have participated in many aspects of clinical trials program including recruitment of study participants and education of study participants and families regarding the study regimen and I have supervised the implementation of several clinical trials including bio- behavioral studies. In addition , I have been involved in the development of a bio- behavioral study of the quality of life of patients undergoing radiation therapy. My overall goal is to improve the coordination of care and services provided to urban older African Americans with advanced cancer; specifically to contribute to the understanding of the effects of psychological distress on supportive care needs.

I am currently enrolled in a Fulltime DNP-FNP program. I first graduated from an associate degree nursing program at Augusta State University where I obtained by Registered Nursing license. Upon graduation I began working at Doctors Hospital of Augusta as a mother-baby nurse. After one year, I cross-trained to labor and delivery where I have been for over three years now. I have been actively involved with breastfeeding initiative at my hospital. I became certified as a lactation counselor, which allowed me to be one of few on my unit to lead the way with Best Fed Beginning program that our hospital has been selected to participate in. I aimed to encourage our nurses to implement skin to skin after delivery, and educate nurses and families about breastfeeding. In the past year I have attained the role as a preceptor for new nurses and nurses new to our unit. While working, I began a RN to BSN program with Georgia Southern University. While at Georgia Southern University, I was selected to become a Minority Health International Research Training (MHIRT) scholar. This allowed me to study abroad to Vienna, Austria where I conducted a systematic review titled “Patients with cancer and family caregivers: Management of symptoms caused by cancer or cancer therapy at home.” This article was published in the German Journal Heilberufe Science.

I am finishing my second year of PhD coursework at the University of Oklahoma, where I continue to be inspired to pursue a path of lifelong learning and nursing research. I was honored to be a first-ever recipient of the Women and Child Health Initiative Predoctoral Scholarship for 2014-2016. Through my doctoral education, I have had opportunities to present research at the Midwest Nursing Research Society’s Annual Conferences in 2015 and 2016 as well as to attend the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science conferences in 2014 and 2015. I am currently employed at East Central University where I coordinate the women’s health, obstetrical, and neonatal content course for pre-licensure nursing students. In addition, I coordinate the pre-licensure nursing research course, and assist or co-coordinate other courses primarily in the senior year. I am very active in committees at the School of Nursing and University level. I mentor and guide honor students in completing honor’s projects and theses. I have practiced clinically in the areas of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and mother-baby (including postpartum women, newborn nursery, and transition nursery). I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1999 and a Master of Science in 2004 from the University of Oklahoma. I maintain certification in neonatal intensive care nursing and as a nursing educator. I am a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, Honor Society of Nursing, the National League for Nursing, and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nursing.

My past nursing experience including expertise ranging from Pediatrics, Women’s Health, Critical Care, and Nursing Leadership. I have completed certification as a Stroke Certified Registered Nurse through the American Association of Neurologic Nurses. I currently serve as the Coordinator of the Stroke Program at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis. In this role, I am responsible for coordinating comprehensive neurologic care via a multidisciplinary team for all potential stroke patients, based on the most current evidence based literature. I currently am enrolled in the DNP program at the University of Missouri in Saint Louis with a program focus of Family Practice. Being selected as a Jonas Nursing Scholar is an honor and a privilege. I recognize the tremendous sacrifices that our veteran’s have made to serve our country. With that being said, I am eager to use my nursing education and leadership experience to help positively impact healthcare outcomes and quality of living for Veteran’s suffering from TBI’s.

I am an acute care nurse practitioner with experience as an emergency room nurse and work as a hospitalist as an ACNP. As an ER nurse I mentored and trained new nurses and was a clinical instructor for ACNP students. I also taught undergraduate nurses in a 4 year program at Chamberlain College and was the course coordinator for medical-surgical nursing. My current research interest is in examining health care overuse in the acute care setting, specifically the emergency department. I would like to examine this in terms of increased cost as well as how it affects patient outcomes, showing we can maintain favorable, in not better patient outcomes when providers are more judicious in their use of health care resources.

I am a nurse-midwife and PhD student at the University of New Mexico College of Nursing. My research interests include perinatal quality improvement, interprofessional collaboration, midwifery and nursing education in developing countries, and perinatal home visiting programs. I currently work as a certified nurse-midwife at a tribal healthcare facility on the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona (Tuba City Regional Healthcare Corporation). My interests in quality improvement and interprofessional collaboration stem largely from my involvement in leadership roles on the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative® task forces at two hospitals. The Baby-Friendly Initiative certifies hospitals that have demonstrated excellence in maternity care and newborn feeding practices. In February of 2016, we successfully passed our Baby-Friendly Hospital® certification in Tuba City. Prior to gaining certification as a midwife, I worked as a labor and delivery nurse and lactation consultant at Group Health Central Hospital in Seattle, WA, and was active on Group Health’s Baby-Friendly task force as well. That facility gained Baby-Friendly certification in 2013, shortly after I left. In 2011, our team was awarded Group Health’s 2011 Celebrating Excellence Award for our successfull breastfeeding-related quality improvement initatives.

Lacey Wright is currently a Predoctoral Scholar at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. After receiving a Civil Engineering degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Lacey worked for the Public Health Service performing water quality research in Oklahoma. In this position, Lacey found a passion for research and improving the lives of community members, prompting her to pursue a career in healthcare. After receiving her Nursing degree from Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes Jewish College, Lacey worked as a neurocritical care nurse before beginning her doctoral studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Lacey’s research interests include the role of free iron and associated homeostatic mechanisms within the central nervous system. By studying the relationship between genomic, epigenomic, and proteomic factors of iron homeostasis and patient outcome variability post-subarachnoid hemorrhage, Lacey hopes to contribute to the development of early therapeutic interventions post-stroke and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Liz Henderson is currently a Nursing Practice Specialist on the Burn, Reconstructive Surgery & OMFS Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). She has worked at MGH for over 16 years having spent the majority of her clinical career as a nurse in the ED at MGH working with a diverse patient population including both victims and perpetrators of violence. Liz has a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Forensic Science from Boston University and a Master of Science in nursing with a specialty in Forensic nursing from Boston College. She is currently a doctoral student at Northeastern University with a focus on violence and injury prevention, and a special interest in firearm related suicide prevention. Liz’s interest in suicide prevention and firearm related injury stems from gaps in practice experienced during her tenure as an ED nurse and solidified by the literature pertaining to the identification, assessment, and discharge disposition of those who present to the acute care setting as a danger to themselves or to others. She has published and lectured on a variety of violence and injury related topics including the Duty to Warn, workplace violence, lateral violence, and care of the forensic patient population in the ED setting. I am a second degree RN, BSN who upon graduation, joined the CT Air National Guard as a 2nd LT. I am one of three RNs at the 103rd MDG. We are tasked with educating and caring for the Airmen that serve at our base. I have spent the majority of my career in Critical Care, starting out in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Yale New Haven Hospital and now work in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the VA Medical Center in West Haven, CT. I am currently pursuing an MBA in Health Care Management at the University of Connecticut while concurrently studying for my DNP in Psych/Mental Health. It is my desire to work with and learn more about the diagnosis and treatment of PTSD. I plan on finishing school in May of 2018 and remaining at the VA in West Haven as a DNP prepared APRN serving our veterans.

Pursuing her doctoral degree at the University of Texas at Austin, Ashley Henneghan, intends to secure a nurse faculty position and educate the nursing workforce, conduct research, and improve patient outcomes. Her nursing experience so far has focused on helping patients cope with their diseases while maintaining dignity and experiencing optimal quality of life. This experience combined with a drive to positively impact patients on a larger scale motivated Ashley to enter graduate studies in 2012. Her bachelor’s in nursing from Pennsylvania State University in addition to her recent master’s in nursing from the UT Austin has laid the foundation for her career goals and helped prepare her for the full scope of nursing practice, science, and education. Her research focus is on the late effects of cancer treatment, specifically understanding and improving cancer survivors’ cognitive function. Throughout her studies she has been working as a teaching assistant in nursing and is now a graduate research assistant. She is currently a Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse, president-elect for the Central Texas Oncology Nursing Society and a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Association, American Holistic Nursing Association, and the Southern Nursing Research Society.

My previous work spans the scope from medical surgical, rehabilitation, Intensive Care, Public Health, Neonatology, Pediatrics, Women’s and building out Ambulatory care offices as a Pediatric and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. I have extensive expertise in innovative program development; especially in Women, Infant & Children health. As an Administrator & Clinical Nurse Specialist I’ve focused on implementing changes in clinical practice based on the evidence available from research, sentinel event corrections, expert opinion, and scientific evidence. I understand the value of a multidisciplinary/inter-professional approach and collaborated as one of the authors of the Neonatal Drug Formulary in 2002 which was distributed to every Neonatal Intensive Care Unit internationally.
