Mary Schaeffer, MSN, PMHNP-BC

Hunter College of CUNY DNP
Biography

Currently, I am just about midway through the Doctorate in Nursing Practice program at Hunter College. My Capstone project will commence next semester. I began my graduate Nursing studies at Hunter many years ago, and eventually completed the Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program. After becoming an Advanced Practice Nurse, I worked in the Psychiatric Emergency Room of Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn. During the time I worked at Coney Island, I was also able to work both in the Assertive Community Treatment program and the Psychiatric Inpatient Unit as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Three years ago, I moved to the Brooklyn Veterans Administration Medical Center in the Outpatient Mental Health Department. In this position, I work with a multidisciplinary team providing treatment for veterans and service members with Post-Traumatic Stress disorder. As of now, I expect to continue my career in this department for many years to come. Since the beginning of my practice as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I have been a preceptor for Master’s students in psychiatric nursing, mainly for students from my alma mater, but also for students from New York University and Stony Brook. Despite making the switch to the Brooklyn VAMC, I keep my Emergency Room skills sharp by working in the Coney Island ER once a month. Finally, when I began studying for the Doctorate in Nursing Practice at Hunter, I was offered a position as an Adjunct Clinical Instructor for Master’s Psychiatric Nursing students.

Lori Schirle, CRNA

University of Miami PhD
Biography

I received my BSN from Saginaw Valley State University and practiced critical care nursing at the University of Michigan Hospital for 15 years before moving to Florida. After working as an RN in Florida for several years, I began my nurse anesthesia education at Florida International University in Miami. Professional engagement was strongly encouraged in my master’s program and I became the student representative for the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists (FANA). Since that initiation, I have served in nearly every Board of Director position in that organization over the last 10 years, including President. My favorite position, held for 5 of those years, is Federal Political Director, which entails keeping abreast of Federal issues impacting CRNAs and communicating this information to members. For the last 2 years, I have served on the Florida Action Coalition implementing the IOM Future of Nursing Recommendations in Florida, and am the Lead of the Practice Action Team charged with implementation of Recommendation #1: Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training. My advocacy efforts lead me to realize how much we rely upon nursing research to inform policy makers, stakeholders, and the public about the critical role nurses must play in health care reform. I am currently a PhD student at the University of Miami with the intent of pursuing a career in nursing research to do my part to add to this body of knowledge.

Notes

Research/Clinical Practice Area: Jonas Scholar – Preventive Health
Dissertation: My mixed-methods dissertation study is titled: Realistic Interruptions During Simulated Medication Administration: An Examination of Errors and Interruption Management Strategies Among Undergraduate Nursing Students. Using a theoretical model from the cognitive science field, the aims of the study are to discover foundational evidence for the development of innovative teaching strategies on best practices to manage interruptions in the clinical setting. Given that interruptions are prevalent in healthcare settings and have been associated with increased frequency and severity of medication administration errors, it is crucial for nurse educators to prepare nursing students with evidence-based strategies to best manage interruptions to improve practice and the safety of patients.
The incorporation of interruption management skills into curricula is recommended in both the nursing and medical literature, however, evidence-based strategies currently do not exist. Findings from the dissertation study may be used to develop theoretical content offered in higher education settings as well as to provide support for evidence-based teaching methods such as simulation. “
